"At the turn of the century the surgeon Georg Hirschel (1897-1963) of the University of Heidelberg had already realized what a tremendous influence the recently available local anaesthetics like Novocaine and vasoactive drugs adrenaline had on the further progress of surgery. His special interest were new techniques of local anaesthesia. In 1911 he presented his new technique of blocking the brachial plexus percutaneously by the axillary approach. A few years later he published a (this) textbook of local anaesthesia. It gained world-wide success due to its excellent illustrations and detailed descriptions. Several editions were published in Germany, even translations into English, French, Spanish and Russian followed.
