The MacKenzie-Papineau Battalion: Canadian Participation in the Spanish Civil War; Victor Hoar; Research Associate: Mac Reynolds; The Copp Clark Publishing Company, 1969. After starting the research for this book, the author found that there were none of the obvious archives such as the Canadian Army Historical Section or the Public Archives of Canada. What he discovered and used for this book were thirty-five lengthy tape-recorded interviews of survivors of the Battalion that had been by the CBC in 1964-5. A second source was a small collection of documents and memorabilia held by the Toronto Public Library, which had been donated by volunteers and the CBC Program Archives. A third important source of information was the papers of the late Edward C. Smith, commander of the Canadian Battalion in Spain. Also, there were published volumes of memoirs and histories, European and American, which contained references to the Canadian participation. Lastly, Mac Reynolds travelled throughout the United States and Canada interviewing surviving volunteers. From this material, the author has estimated that some 1250 Canadians actually served in Spain. This book tells the story of a mostly forgotten Canadian military venture. This book, 285 pages is in near-fine condition in a very-good dust jacket that is in a protective mylar wrap. There is a section of black and white photographs and there are some drawn maps in the text block. A very scarce book.
