Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. In what the New York Times's A.O. Scott called a "suave, scholarly tour de force," J. Hoberman delivers a brilliant and witty look at the decade when politics and pop culture became one. This was the era of the Missile Gap and the Space Race, the Black and Sexual Revolutions, the Vietnam War and Watergate-as well as the tele-saturation of the American market and the advent of Pop art. In "elegant, epigrammatic prose," as Scott put it, Hoberman moves from the political histories of movies to the theater of wars, national political campaigns, and pop culture events. With entertaining reinterpretations of key Hollywood movies (such as Bonnie and Clyde, The Wild Bunch, and Shampoo), and meditations on personages from Che Guevara, John Wayne, and Patty Hearst to Jane Fonda, Ronald Reagan, and Dirty Harry, Hoberman reconstructs the hidden political history of 1960s cinema and the formation of America's mass-mediated politics. Delivers a brilliant and witty look at the decade when politics and pop culture became one. Evokes the period through meditations on the personas of Che Guevara, JFK, Patty Hearst, alongside John Wayne, Jane Fonda, James Bond and Dirty Harry. Hardcover. Condizione: Used - Like New. Bill Viola (b. 1951) is widely acknowledged as the leading video artist on the international scene. His video installations - total environments that envelop the viewer in image and sound - employ sophisticated state-of-the-art technologies and are distinguished by their precision and direct simplicity. This catalogue has been published in conjunction with 'Bill Viola, ' the first major survey of the artist's work and the largest exhibition ever devoted to an individual video artist, organized by the Whitney Museum of American Art and curated by David A. Ross and Peter Sellars. The book features a dynamic and visually rich selection of works from 1972 to 1996, in a presentation compiled by Kira Perov and Bill Viola, with written descriptions by the artist, and a conversation between Viola and poet/scholar Lewis Hyde on the spiritual roots and cultural traditions underlying Viola's art. There is also an overview of the artist's achievement by David A. Ross, Whitney Museum director, who has been involved with Viola's work since its beginning and, as the first museum curator of video art, has played a major role in the history and development of the field. Out of print. Clean tight book with minimal wear.

Soft cover. Condizione: Near Fine. 1st Edition. First Five Issues - Conditions the same unless noted: Issues 2 through 5 are Near Fine or better - no creases or shelfwear to speak of, sharp corners, bright colors with no fading. Seems almost unread. No. 1 has a bit of wear and has a small hole punched through the small Print Mint circular logo in the upper left corner with some tape strengthening same hole to rear corner. Colors are still very right with no fading and interior is NF or better. Overall No. 1 is close to NF but certainly at least Very Good++. Arcade was a short-lived but deeply influential anthology that captured the underground comix scene, trying to bring it to the newstands throughout the country. The magazine ran for only 7 issues - approx. 20,000 copies issued, not reprinted. Primary editors were Art Spiegelman and Bill Griffith (Zippy the Pinhead) and showcased writings and comic illustrations by underground icons like Robert Crumb, S. Clay Wilson, and Aline Kominsky along with more well known counter-culture heroes like Bukowski and Burroughs.
