[First edition 1935] `four words which were so often used by Jesus: Repent, Believe,Love, Enter: the four practical demands of the gospel' 23 - differ from `"common faith" which John Dewey has so powerfully recommended. It implies, as he sees, a surrender of one's self to the wholehearted effort to realize ideal values. The gospel says all this; but it adds two things which Dewey tries to keep out ofthe picture, 1 the supernatural being, capable of solicitude for men, whom men have called God, 2 that this religious experience. .shall become a particular historical effort.' 25f. -- `when faith comes, one loses all the reasons for hatred and alienation and fear of men; the temper of love enters with the attainment of the central certainty and repose in the goodness of the most real.' 24 -- `Christianity is the one religion under which men have fought for the rights of others, as well as for their own rights. It is the one religion under which the law of civil right has grown strong. .the love of men demanded by Christianity is devoid of indulgence, capable of severity, containing the salt of a just pugnacity [with] all that sternness which Nietzsche justly saw as necessary to creative power; and had we been sufficiently alive to that side of the gospel, much of the Nietzscheian bluster against Christianity would have been pointless, and the Marxian caricature of religion as a spineless yielding to wrong, palpably absurd.' 31 f. -- `The lostness of men was about [Jesus] .yet the gospel he preached was an unhurried gospel. .it was not animated by panic, because it had its central certainty of the outcome in God's hands.' 44 VG, stapled, in orig. ivory wrapper. unbound. 1 page, 11 x 8.5 inches, Cambridge, MA, July 10, 1963, responding to a New York City attorney who has requested his autograph, in full: "This is a curious request -- not in itself, but as from a New York attorney, presumably busy with the infinite social and economic problems of an overgrown metropolis. But your office is in the neighborhood of the New School for Social Research -- an old haunt of mine, and of many friends; and perhaps this is a bit of extra-curricular activity. Anyhow -- morituras (within few years) saluto." Also included is an unsigned 3.5 x 5-inch black-and-white snapshot dated September 1962. Fine condition. American idealist philosopher at Harvard University.
