In spite of German warnings the Lusitania sailed on schedule from New York on May 1, 1915, carrying nearly 2000 passengers and crew and 4200 cases of ammunition. Although war was raging in Europe, no naval vessels protected her as she sailed into foggy St. George's Channel six days later. A German U-boat captain, looking through his periscope, sighted the biggest ship he as ever seen. HE fired on torpedo- and the Lusitania was down in 18 minutes. But the outcry lasted for 3 years, and brought America out of its isolation and into the "war to end all wars.

He was a self-taught cobbler's son from New Hampshire who was keenly interested in the science of flight. At the age of twenty-two he was a carnival balloonist, and was in the process of planning a balloon flight across the Atlantic when the Civil War broke out. He offered his service to the Union Army and despite the skepticism of generals gave a demonstration for President Lincoln. H even went so far as to relay the first message by telegraph from aloft. Lincoln was so excited about the balloon that he had its base installed on the White House lawn. This is the full story of Lowe's great venture told for young readers.
