Dabei gehorte er zu den Hauptakteuren im millionenschweren Geschaft mit den Bildern, welche die Nazis in den Museen beschlagnahmten und in den besetzten Gebieten raubten. Meike Hoffmann und Nicola Kuhn erzahlen zum ersten Mal das Leben des schillernden Kunsthandlers. Als Pionier der modernen Kunst ist Hildebrand Gurlitt in den 1920er Jahren vielbewundert. 1930 wird er als Museumsdirektor entlassen, als der Gegenwind von rechts zu stark wird, und verliert 1933 erneut seinen Posten. Doch kurz danach beginnt sein zweiter Aufstieg als Kollaborateur und Profiteur im Nationalsozialismus. Er verschafft dem Deutschen Reich Devisen durch den Verkauf von ,Entarteter Kunst", geht nach Paris und erobert sich den Kunstmarkt in den besetzten Gebieten. Er wird reich mit Bildern, die er an Hitlers geplantes Museum in Linz verkauft - und ist schon 1948 als Direktor des Kunstvereins in Dusseldorf wieder in Amt und Wurden. Gurlitts Biographie offnet den Blick fur ein viel zu lange vernachlassigtes Kapitel der NS-Vergangenheit. Zugleich macht sie begreiflich, wie dieses Kapitel so lange verdrangt werden konnte.
