Nils von Hofsten (1881-1967) var professor i anatomi, senare zoologi och 1944-1947 rektor för Uppsala universitet, känd för sitt engagemang inom genetik och rasbiologi. Inom zoologin intresserade sig Hofsten bl. a. för de ryggradslösa djurens anatomi, embryologi och geografiska utbredning. Sommaren 1908 deltog han i Gerard De Geers expedition till Spetsbergen med båten Svensksund. Nils von Hofsten började tidigt intressera sig för genetiken och fokuserade på eugenik och befolkningsfrågor. Han var styrelseledamot vid Statens institut för rasbiologi från 1926 ända till 1953 (ordförande från 1945). Festskriften innehåller bidrag av J. C.
