"Holdt's words and pictures - unsophisticated, raw, yet heartfelt, immediate and powerful - combine to give a personal, sometimes naïve, yet persuasive analysis of the racism and class inequalities in American society, particularly in the 1960's, which was an especially inflammatory period in race relations". Hard to look at photos of the permanent underbelly in our so called classless society.Little has changed in the almost 50 years since the book originally was published. 304 pages with numerous photos.

Manoscritto / Collezionismo cartaceo Prima edizione
Pamphlet. This is not a book. The original pamphlet distributed by Jacob Holdt at his lecture titled "American Pictures" and held at the Sol Goldman YM-YWHA Auditorium, NYC, on February 6, 2000, along with the venue's poster advertising the event and half of the admission ticket. The presentation by Holdt was a multi-media documentation of hitchhiking across America for five years with his dog and camera, covering more than 100,000 miles and 400 abodes, all made possible by selling blood twice a week. The photographs were first seen in his book of the same name. On one side of the pamphlet is an introduction that deals with white racism and declares "the 'show' is oppression, not entertainment." The other side has a text piece by Holdt about the book, a poem by Nis Petersen, and an order form. C-fold; photo-copy; 6 pages; 4 b&w illustrations; 4.75 x 8.5 inches. Poster: photo-copy; 8.5 x 14 inches; with a fold/crease. Condition: Fine pamphlet. LAID-IN is an interview with Holdt. Will be sandwiched securely between stiff layers of cardboard and shipped the next business day.

Ships from California. Ships same or next day (weekdays and Saturdays)! ABOUT: American Pictures: A Personal Journey Through the American Underclass Jacob Holdt / Paperback / 1985 Jacob Holdt's American Pictures is a documentary?style photographic and narrative journey through the poorest and most marginalized communities in the United States. First published in 1985, the book expands on Holdt's earlier slideshow project, presenting hundreds of photographs alongside autobiographical text that recounts his years traveling across America and living among those he photographed. Scope and Approach Holdt, a Danish traveler, spent the 1970s hitchhiking across the United States with almost no money, staying in the homes of the people he met. His camera became a tool for documenting the realities of the American underclass: poverty, racism, addiction, violence, and systemic inequality. The book contains roughly 800 photographs, many in color, depicting life in ghettos, rural poverty, and transient communities. Major Themes - Poverty and Structural Inequality: Holdt shows the daily struggles of families living in extreme deprivation, revealing the social and economic forces that trap people in generational poverty. - Race and Segregation: A significant portion of the book focuses on Black communities, exposing the legacy of racism and the conditions of the urban underclass. - Intimacy and Trust: Holdt lived with the people he photographed, often for extended periods. His images reflect a level of access and vulnerability rarely seen in documentary work. - Violence and Survival: The narrative includes accounts of shootings, domestic violence, and murders he witnessed, as well as his own arrest by the FBI during his travels. - Contrasts of American Life: Holdt juxtaposes the underclass with the wealthy Americans he also encountered, highlighting the stark divide between privilege and poverty.
