The edges have some sign where pages may have been cut open to read. David Ricardo (18 April 1772 11 September 1823) was a British political economist, politician, and member of Parliament. He is recognized as one of the most influential classical economists, alongside figures such as Malthus, Adam Smith and James Mill. He made his fortune financing government borrowing and later retired to an estate in Gloucestershire. He was friends with prominent figures, engaging in debates over various topics. Ricardo was also a member of The Geological Society. As MP, Ricardo advocated for liberal political movements and reforms, including free trade, parliamentary reform, and criminal law reform. He believed free trade increased the well-being of people by making goods more affordable. Ricardo's free trade views eventually become public policy in Britain. Ricardian theory of international trade challenges the mercantilist concept of accumulating gold or silver by promoting industry specialization and free trade. Ricardo introduced the concept of "comparative advantage", suggesting that nations concentrate resources in industries where they have the greatest efficiency of production relative to alternative uses of resources. He argued that international trade is always beneficial. He opposed protectionism for national economies. Hutches Trower (1777-1833) was a member of a firm of stockbrokers, and it was at the Stock Exchange that he first met Ricardo. They ere both shareholders in the Bank of England and had a common interest in economic and political philosophy, and became intimate family friends. The whole collection of Trower's letters are not in the possession of University College, Longon, and they cover a variety of topics as ell as economics and Finance. Appendix A here covers Trower on silver bullion and depreciation of bank notes with Ricardo's reply to him and to Groter (1767-1837) a principal partner in Coutts' bank, who wrote a pamphlet on the "Currency and Exchange" applied to the Gold Bullion Report of 1810. James Bonar (27 September 1852 18 January 1941) was a Scottish civil servant, political economist and historian of economic thought. Bonar graduated MA in Mental Philosophy from Glasgow University in 1874. He followed the same lengthy undergraduate career that Adam Smith pursued more than a century before gaining a Snell Exhibition to Balliol College, Oxford from which he graduated with a first in 1877. A major early influence was the moral philosopher, Edward Caird: first as Professor at Glasgow and then as Master of Balliol. In 1881 he began a career in the civil service only retiring from his final position, as Deputy Manager of the Ottawa branch of the Royal mint, in 1919 at the age of 67. He was awarded an LLD from Glasgow University in 1887, and an honorary doctorate from Cambridge University in 1935. Jacob Harry Hollander (18711940) was an American economist. Hollander was born in Baltimore, Maryland. He graduated from Johns Hopkins University with a BA in 1891, and a Ph.D. in 1894. He became associate professor of finance there. In 1900, he became assistant professor of political economy, becoming full professor in 1904. He was appointed secretary to the Bimetallic Commission of 1897. US President McKinley named him Treasurer of the island of Puerto Rico in 1900. He resigned in 1901 after introducing a tax system. He was special commissioner to investigate financial conditions in San Domingo and until 1908 was financial advisor of the Dominican Republic. He also was an official arbitrator in various labor disputes. His contributions to Ricardo scholarship are considerable. He edited the Letters of David Ricardo to J. R. McCulloch (1895) and (together with James Bonar) Letters to Hutches Trower and others (1899). He also initiated a famous series of Reprints of Economic Tracts in 1903.…
