Hardcover. Condizione: Fine. Near Fine. 1st Edition. Pp. 212 colour photographic plates. Dust jacket near fine, not price-clipped. Hardback binding fine. Contents clean and tight, inscribed by the author to Eric Hosking. A near fine to fine copy. Please note a large heavy book and small postal surcharge may apply. [Eric Hosking…OBE, Hon FRPS, FBIPP (1909-1991) was widely acknowledged as one of the world's most eminent natural history photographers, "Perhaps the most famous bird photographer ever to have lived" (Gemma Padley). He was pioneering and developed new techniques, especially the use of flash photography and automatic shutter release technology, which enabled him to photograph birds at night and freeze birds in flight for the first time. Famously, when just 28 he lost an eye to a tawny owl while climbing up to a hide in rural Wales, the event which inspired the ingenious title of his autobiography "An Eye for a Bird", 1970. Over his exceptionally long career he photographed over 1,800 species, and his pictures have appeared in some 1,000 books, including the popular New Naturalist series, of which he was photographic editor. Hosking was not only a photographer of birds but also a highly knowledgeable ornithologist.] Size: Folio. Inscribed by Author(s). Book.

Hardcover. Condizione: new. Hardcover. AUSTRALIA'S BIRDS OF PREY are exhilarating: the effortless soaring of an eagle, the kestrel's hovering precision, the electrifying pace of a hobby and the controlled glide of a harrier - often so slow, that it must surely stall? These sights so inspired David Hollands that in 1984 he wrote…his first book, Eagles Hawks and Falcons of Australia . This magnificent new 444 page book is a lyrical account of these unique birds of prey - a culmination of his life's work. Each of the 25 species has its own chapter and the text is brilliantly complemented by 450 of the author's own dramatic photographs. Hardcover. Condizione: Fine. Condizione sovraccoperta: As New. 1st Edition. Condition of Hardback Book: This would be as new except there is a very small, neat gift inscription on page 1. Photo attached. Kingfishers and Kookaburras! Vibrant in color, conspicuous in activity and often hilariously raucous, these are some of the mo…st well-known and much-loved birds in Australia! Each of the ten Australian species has its own remarkably different story, brought to life in this book in a way that highlights their unique traits and individual personalities. Kingfishers and kookaburras are a versatile group. Their colors range across the spectrum. They have adapted to rivers and deserts, to wet rainforests and dry woodlands, to mangrove swamps and islands. They catch lizards, snakes and spiders on the ground, dive underwater for fish, snatch frogs in the tree canopy, and take insects in full flight. This book consists of ten essays, one on each bird, accompanied by spectacular photographs, many capturing moments of flight frozen in mid-air. Complementing the charming stories is a practical field guide section for readers intent on pursuing their own adventures in the kingfishers' realm. Also includes field notes on the birds, accompanied by distribution maps and photography tips. This book is both a study and a celebration of kingfishers, the jewels of the Australian bush. It will be treasured by photographers, naturalists, serious ornithologists or anyone thrilled at the sight of a kingfisher! 132pp.

Hardcover. Condizione: Fine. Condizione sovraccoperta: Fine. 1st Edition. David Hollands first became aware of owls as a young boy upon hearing the quavering hoot of the Tawny Owl which lived, out of sight, in the woods near his home. Their secrets remained undiscovered but then he came across some spectral Barn Owls in an ancie…nt English barn. These were the first owls that he had watched at close quarters and photographed in the night. It was a magical experience and, by then, that first awareness had progressed and become a lifelong passion. David Hollands came to Australia in 1961and for a while, the demands of running a medical practice put a brake on other activities. Nevertheless, his fascination for birds, owls and photography could never remain submerged for long and, in 1999, he completed 'Birds of the Night' - a comprehensive study in words and photographs of Australia's owls, frogmouths and nightjars. However, David's owl studies continued. There were owls to be pursued around the world and he set out to find and photograph as many as possible. By his own admission, he has succeeded beyond his wildest dreams. The author's love of birds extends beyond owls and he has also written books on Australia's Birds of Prey and on Kingfishers and Kookaburras. All three books won the Whitley Award for the Best Illustrated Australian Natural History book of that year.
