Han ritade flerbostadshus och villor, broar och offentliga byggnader och svarade ofta för hela byggprocessen. Chiewitz föddes i Stockholm och utbildade sig bland annat vid Konstakademiens Arkitekturskola. Efter examen arbetade han utomlands i sex år, bland annat i Grekland för att rita militära anläggningar och i England hos uppfinnaren John Ericsson samt med järnvägsutbyggnader. Chiewitz var före sin tid vad gäller funktionella planlösningar för bostäder och användande av gjutjärnsteknik för broar. Han startade Stockholms Byggnadsförening och var föreningens första ordförande. Överhopad av uppdrag och oförmögen att hantera ekonomin försattes Chiewitz, vid 34 års ålder, i konkurs av finansiärerna och tvingades fly till Finland ifrån ett fängelsestraff som bedräglig gäldenär. I Finland mottogs Chiewitz med öppna armar. Han blev länsarkitekt och även stadsarkitekt i Åbo med rätt att ta egna uppdrag, såsom stadsplaner, kyrkor, fängelser, flerfamiljshus och militära byggnader. Chiewitz blev dessutom den ledande industriarkitekten. Riddarhuset och Nya Teatern i Helsingfors var prestigefulla offentliga uppdrag. Chiewitz utbildade arkitekturelever vid sin 'Akademi' i Åbo. Flitig, originell och med en enorm produktion under bara tolv år i landet, finns det ännu mycket att se i Finland".
