In order to bypass contract agreements with her British publisher, Braeme wrote American romances under the pen name that was created by flipping her initials. After her death in 1884, her publishers Street & Smith continued using Bertha M. Clay as a house name. Numerous writers, perhaps as many as a dozen, such as Frederick V. Dey and John R. Coryell were published under this name.
