The authors, who are experts in elk ecology, asked 25 other experts in the field to rate the habitat quality of 16 example landscapes. The results of this survey were then compared to the predictions of a habitat effectiveness model for elk in western Oregon and Washington. The authors found that the model's predictions were generally in agreement with the opinions of the experts, but there were some notable exceptions. These exceptions were most pronounced for habitats that were dominated by large expanses of either forage or cover. These findings suggest that the model may need to be modified to better account for the effects of these habitat features on elk habitat quality.
