Original blind-stamped quarter morocco and sand-grain cloth; spine lettered…in gilt; covers a little worn and sunned; plates discoloured; scattered foxing; a very good set. The front free endpaper of each volume is tantalisingly inscribed 'Louis de Rougemont | Souvenir de tante Hedwige | 1881'. Sadly, the recipient is not the infamous hoaxer of the same name (1847-1921), who serialised a spurious account of living with Australian Aboriginal tribes in 'The Wide World Magazine'. That Louis was born Henri Louis Grin at Gressy, Vaud canton, Switzerland. However, a short distance across the lake from his childhood home, there was in fact a Hedwige Sophie Adolphine de Rougemont (1838-1910), living at Neuchâtel, with a nephew, Louis Henry Philippe de Rougemont (1871-1920) who we believe must have been the recipient of these volumes (Geneanet). It is possible that the name of this prominent local family inspired Grin's fictitious identity. The text itself is a scarce compendium of voyages for children, with an emphasis on adventure and shipwreck. The author was surgeon and naturalist on the 'Astrolabe' during Jules Dumont d'Urville's voyage to Antarctica and the Pacific. The penultimate chapter, entitled 'Australie: Esquisse sur le naturels de la Nouvelle-Galles du Sud', is extracted from the journal of Dumont-d'Urville's first voyage. Ferguson 2543aa. [2 items].

Two volumes, octavo, frontispiece in each volume and 38 black & white plates in the text; in contemporary quarter morocco. A very detailed illustrated history of the grands voyages for children, including La Pérouse and the third voyage of James Cook with an apparently original version of the "Death of Cook". The second last cha…pter of the book has a sketch of the natives of New South Wales based on the account of Dumont d'Urville, who visited Australia in 1827. Hombron actually sailed with Dumont d'Urville as surgeon and naturalist on his voyage to the Antarctic. This compendious work details the history of voyaging and, as commonly, gravitates towards tales of wreck and ruin. As might be expected in a French work, there is a great deal on La Pérouse, including sections on his battles in Hudson Bay, his stay at Monterey in California, and his death at Vanikoro. Also present are chapters on, to name but a few, Alexander Selkirk marooned on Juan Fernandez, Bougainville's visit to Tahiti, and the discovery of New Zealand. This work is not often seen, although Ferguson was able to locate a handful of copies for his Appendix. Ferguson seems to imply thnat all copies seem to have some if th eillustraions 9n colour: this seems to be an error. This copy has the ticket of the Paris binder Lenègre. . Some foxing and embrowning throughout, some crude paper repairs to bottom right-hand corner of both volumes (not affecting text), otherwise a good set.
