Hard Cover. Condizione: Near Fine. Condizione sovraccoperta: Fine. First Edition. First edition. Signed by author without inscription on title page. 1993 Hard Cover. 275 pp. "It's the story of Claire, a therapist who many years ago gave up an infant daughter for adoption, and Claire's patient Jody, a young woman confused about her future. Claire begins to suspect that Jody is the daughter she gave away. Both women have slightly troubling personal lives. Many of their relationships have shortcomings that neither is particularly happy with and they begin to rely on the patient-therapist relationship too much. This is a witty, darkly comic psychological thriller that is very, very readable. Signed by author.

DJ has slight wear and soiling/sticker residue on front. Amy M. Homes (pen name A. M. Homes; born December 18, 1961) is an American writer best known for her controversial novels and unusual short stories, which feature extreme situations and characters. Her novel The End of Alice is about a convicted child molester and murderer. Homes, who was adopted at birth, met her biological parents for the first time when she was 31, and published a memoir, The Mistress's Daughter about her exploration of her expanded "family". Her novel May We Be Forgiven was published by Viking Books in 2012; its first chapter was published in the 100th issue of Granta (in 2008), and was selected by Salman Rushdie for The Best American Short Stories 2008. The novel won the Women's Prize for Fiction in 2013. Her newest novel, The Unfolding, was published by Viking on September 6, 2022. Homes published the first chapter of her 1999 novel Music for Torching as a short story in The New Yorker. The novel features characters who appeared in the short stories of The Safety of Objects. It features a suburban couple who deliberately burn their house down. Jill Adams in The Barcelona Review described it as having Homes' "trademark style of wry humor applied to the uncanny dissection of suburbia's facade." The Observer found it "immensely disturbing". People magazine called the novel "haunting,", Gary Krist in The New York Times stated "I found myself rapt from beginning to end, fascinated by Homes's single-minded talent for provocation." In Music for Torching, the controversial author of The End of Alice lays bare the foundations of marriage and family life at the end of the century. Flash-frozen in the anxious culture of a suburban subdivision, Paul and Elaine (the couple first featured in Homes's collection of stories The Safety of Objects) have two boys and a beautiful home, yet they find themselves thoroughly inexplicably stuck. Obsessed with "making things good again," they spin the quiet terrors of family life into fantastical frenzy that careens out of control, doing and saying all the things we dare not, throwing into full relief the chasm between our public and private selves. From a strange and hilarious encounter on the floor of the pantry with a Stepford-wife neighbor, to an ill-conceived plan for a tattoo, to a sexy town cop who shows up at every inopportune moment, to house cleaning team in space suits, to a mistress calling on the cell phone, to a hostage situation at the school, Homes creates characters so outrageously flawed and deeply human that they are entirely believable. With Music For Torching, A.M. Homes brings her unnerving emotional intensity to the heart of America, creating a new and dangerous territory that is distinctly her own. Derived from a Kirkus review: Paul and Elaine Weiss have a very bad ten days in this newest by Homes, who takes her penchant for extreme situations and behavior to the suburbs. It begins as a typical Westchester County weekend: a dinner party followed by a barbecue at which everyone drinks too much and reveals their boredom and unhappinessâ"except that the Weisses top their neighbors in acting out. Elaine cuts Paul's neck with a knife on Friday; he has phone sex with their divorced buddy Henry's new girlfriend on Saturday; and they join forces on Sunday to set fire to their house, then head for a motel with their sons, sullen teen Daniel and asthmatic nine-year-old Sammy. Homes flings us into the middle of her protagonists" messed-up lives, yet for a long time keeps her readers emotionally distant from them. Whether detailing a lesbian encounter on a washing machine or genital tattooing, the narration doesn't bat an eye or hazard an explanation. This trendy flat affect consorts oddly but aptly with the author's rather generic satire of suburban society: though the time is clearly the present, the wives obsess about laundry and meals while the hus.

Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Very Good. No Jacket. First Edition. Photographs by Amy Arbus, with an essay by A.M. Homes. Heavy card boards over a cloth spine. A young Madonna on the front cover. Book is in Tidy condition inside and out. Minor bumping to corners. No inscriptions or markings. This is a large heavy book so postage may be more that quoted postage. During the eighties Amy Arbus (Daughter of Diane) ran a weekly column in the Village Voice called 'On The Street'. Similar to the straight-ups of i-D she pictured anybody and everyone who appeared interesting. This book compiles highlights of a decade of her work, and features a young Madonna amongst others.
Hardcover. Condizione: Fine. Condizione sovraccoperta: Fine. 1st Edition. Between 1980 and 1990, Amy Arbus produced a monthly street photography column for The Village Voice entitled On the Street, making over five hundred black & white portraits of New Yorkers across the East Village, SoHo, and the Lower East Side. This volume brings together seventy of those images, a decade's worth of documentary work shot across one of the most concentrated periods of cultural production in New York's recent history. The Village Voice was the country's first alternative newsweekly and the primary organ of record for downtown New York's cultural life, the publication that first gave serious coverage to hip-hop, Keith Haring, and Jean-Michel Basquiat, and where Robert Christgau set the critical agenda for a generation of music writing. Appearing in its pages carried weight. Arbus's column ran inside that context, and its placement there was part of its meaning. Arbus worked with a single directive: photograph anyone who makes you turn your head. Her subjects: musicians, designers, drag performers, scenesters, and artists were the people who used clothing and appearance as a primary creative medium in a neighborhood simultaneously producing Madonna, Basquiat, Haring, Cindy Sherman, Sonic Youth, and Anna Sui. Many were unknown beyond that world at the time of photographing. Several are now cultural reference points. The work sits between street photography and portraiture. Most of her subjects are posed, many meet the camera directly, and a consistently low angle gives the images a quiet formality. The Village Voice column ran the full length of the decade, through the AIDS crisis, and the archive carries the weight of that. Works from the series are included in many museum collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, MoMA, and the Morgan Library .
Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. Hardcover. 4to. Published by Welcome Books, New York. 2006. 104 pgs. Illustrated. Bound in grey cloth boards with black and white photo pastedown present to the front board and titles present to the spine and rear board. Boards have light shelf-wear present to the extremities. No ownership marks present. Text is clean and free of marks. Binding tight and solid. Between 1980 and 1990, over five hundred of photographer Amy Arbus's impromptu and edgy portraits of New Yorkers appeared in the Village Voice's monthly fashion feature, "On the Street." The column's missive was to document the city's most adventurous trednsetters as they lived their lives. But Arbus's photographs tell much more than a style story. From the friendliest to the grittiest, every one of these images is a potent tribute to self-expression. Taken as a whole, they reflect an era of contradictions, a time in America when urban individualism and raw creativity were courageously fighting for breathing room and holding their own in a culture ruled by wealthy conservatism and Republican politics. EB; 10.54 X 0.82 X 13.74 inches; 104 pages.
