Single sheet (image size 17 x 11 4/8 inches laid down onto; sheet size 21 x 13 inches). Fine engraved and etched portrait of Portrait of William II, Prince of Orange; half-length turned to right, wearing armour and a lace collar; within oval medallion frame: "Natus XXVII Maii MDCXXVI", by Crispijn van Queborn after Honthorst, al…l with exceptionally fine original hand-colour in full, expertly and delicately heightened in gold. THE CENTRAL FIGURE OF A CRITICAL STRUGGLE FOR POWER IN THE DUTCH REPUBLIC An elegant portrait of the young King William, and a pair to Queborn's engraved portrait of his wife Mary Stuart after Anthony van Dyck (Hollstein 55). Beneath the portrait are some verses by the celebrated Caspar Barlaeus (1584-1648), who in 1647 published "Rerum per octennium in Brasilia et alibi gestarum, sub praefectura illustrissimi comitis I. Mauritii, Nassauiae, &c. comitis, Nunc Vesaliae Gubernatoris & Equitatus Foederatorum Belgii Ordd. Sub vriaco Ductoris, Historia", an account of the eight years that Prince Mauritz of Nassau (half brother of William II's father) spent in command of Brazil. William of Nassau, the Prince of Orange (1626-1650) was the son of Frederick Henry, the Stadtholder of the United Provinces. At the age of fifteen (the age he appears in this portrait), he was married to Mary Stuart (1631-1660), the eldest daughter of Charles I of England, Scotland and Ireland, and Princess Royal. The "prince led a restless and dissolute life until his accession to the stadholderate in 1647 gave him an outlet for his great abilities, masterful will and keen ambition. His plans for an aggressive policy against Spain were ended by his early death from smallpox. A few days after he died, his wife gave birth to the son who would become William III of England" (National Portrait Gallery online). After an original portrait by Gerard van Honthorst, who was born in Utrecht, and from an artistic family "Gerard, also known as Gerrit, was its most successful member. Following a stay in Italy in the 1610s, he returned to Utrecht in 1620. He was a prominent representative of a group of painters that have become known as the Utrecht Caravaggists, Dutch followers of the Italian artist Caravaggio. The latter was especially known for his nocturnal scenes of candlelit figures. In the 1630s, Van Honthorst acquired a name in court circles as a portrait painter, which led him to move to The Hague in 1637. In 1649, Van Honthorst was commissioned to paint part of the decoration of the Orange hall at the stadholder's palace of Huis ten Bosch. In 1652, he returned to Utrecht, where he died four years later" (Rijksmuseum online). Catalogued by Kate Hunter.
