Jean de La Fontaine, né en 1621, doit attendre ses 43 ans pour connaître le succès, grâce aux Contes et nouvelles en vers, qui paraissent en 1664. Entré au service de Fouquet en 1658, il passe à celui de la duchesse d'Orléans, puis de Mme de La Sablière, sans jamais cesser de publier. Il dédie ses fables au dauphin, puis au fils du dauphin. En 1683, il est élu à l'Académie française. En 1693, son retour à la foi le pousse à promettre de ne plus écrire que des oeuvres pieuses. Il meurt deux ans plus tard, le 13 avril 1695.

L'ouvrage est bien complet du frontispice et des 100 gravures à mi page sur les dessins de Romain De HOOGE et retouchées dans cette édition par PICART. Nombreux bandeaux gravés. Réimpression de l'édition de 1701. Reliures demi chagrin chocolat, dos à 5 nerfs orné de caissons, fleurons, tomaisons, et titre, frappés à l'or fin. Plats bordés de filets dorés. Tranches jaspées. Intérieur très frais, bel exemplaire, reliures présentant quelques légers frottements.

Where front cover meets spine is slightly worn and torn on both volumes, though intact. interior of front and back covers have a lovely, colorful marbled-like design. Numerous miniature etchings by Romain de Hooge / a very rare and attractive edition of Boccaccio with extremely fine illustrations.

Hardcover. Condizione: Good. Good copy in full leather. 12mo. Raised bands, gilt on spine, red-brown title band, gilt embellishments on fore-edges of boards. Dust-staining to edges of page block, but interior is bright and free of foxing. Some toning and off-setting along edges of endpapers and pastedowns. Leather is cracked on back hinge, but is firm. A few quires split in margin and a few plates closely trimmed, with minor loss in outer margin, otherwise internally nice and clean. First edition with Hooghe?s beautiful illustrations of this famous collection of tales modelled on Boccaccio?s Decameron. According to Brunet, two variants were published: one with text published below or above the engraving (The present copy) and one with engravings published separately. "Les Cent Nouvelles Nouvelles" were first printed by Antoine Vérard in 1486, twenty years after manuscript circulation (only one manuscript is known today). Romeyn de Hooghe (1645 - 1708), born in Amsterdam, was a multi-talented artist known for etching, drawing, painting, and sculpting. He became famous for his political caricatures of Louis XIV and propaganda prints supporting William of Orange. His work included early comic strips and illustrations for significant texts like "Hieroglyphica of Merkbeelden der oude volkeren" (1735).Throughout his career, de Hooghe produced over 3500 prints and adorned city maps with decorative borders. He was praised for inventive compositions in engravings and painted large panels for public and private spaces. Despite acclaim, he faced criticism later in life for his controversial subjects and lifestyle. Historian Simon Schama lauded de Hooghe as the first great modern graphic satirist, highlighting his role in portraying conflicts between William III and Louis XIV as struggles for liberty against religious despotism.
