Prima edizione
Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. 1st Edition. Printed in the U.S.A. Date on the title page. First Printing. Frontispiece, Preface, List of Illustrations, Prologue, Appendix, Index; xxvii, 517 pages. The original maroon cloth is a bit scuffed, with several white marks; there is some rubbing, with slight loss, to corner tips and spine ends. The binding is strong. The interior is a bit toned throughout, but all plates are clear; there are no markings in the text, though the word 'autobiography' is written in ink on the front free endpaper. Opposite, is a charming bookplate by Julia Flory for Joel Babcock Hayden and Hazel Petty Hayden. [Visible in one of my five images of the actual book.] Several pages remain unopened, only three places with rough openings. From the Prologue: Here is a lady---the most remarkable woman, the editor believes, of that remarkable age---who, in spite of suffering from almost constant and unbearable pain for nearly thirty years, taught herself Latin and Greek, learned mathematics, battled against great odds to become versed in ancient and modern philosophy, and held captive in her chamber the greatest men of the century, by [her intellect] and the charm of her personality. During her last years she wrote, 'scatteredly' and 'dispersedly,' a philosophical treatise of such originality that Leibniz himself not only drew from it some of his characteristic ideas, but again and again called attention, in his letters and essays, to the influence which she had had upon him. Henry More dedicated his first important prose work to her---"An Antidote Against Atheism." [See my father's copy of More's said 'Antidote' (1712 fourth edition) listed separately.] As with every book from my father's collection, tipped-in at the front is the small, attractive, acid-free bookplate pictured on my homepage. All books are wrapped with special care and are shipped promptly with tracking; international sales sent via global priority, also with tracking.
