D. Zattara. The publication addressed literature, theater, poetry, and the visual arts, explicitly recording in its editorials (cf. no. 4) the severe limitations imposed by economic suffocation and the self-censorship of the era. Independent Bimonthly Magazine, directed by Enrique D. Zattara, published five issues between October 1978 and May 1980. A sixth issue, under the title Ulises N…ova Arte, was published at the end of 1980, co-edited by Zattara and Horacio Tarcus, director of Ulises. Revista de Artes y Humanidades together with Martín Vega, who had published two issues in those same years. On the back cover of the first issue of Nova Arte, Zattara explained part of the aesthetic program: We start from conceiving aesthetics as part of a system of structures of different value in their internal relationship, which encompass all reality () we do not accept either a metaphysical conception or a sociologist conception of art, of the aesthetic production of man ( El destino del arte , I, 1). Those who promoted the magazine identified their voices with that of Nova Arte understood as the creative expression of a youth that prefers not to deny itself. From this perspective, Nova Arte brought together artists and intellectuals who were at different stages in their careers, including: Juan José Sebreli, Jorge Romero Brest, Abelardo Castillo, Jorge Ricardo [Jorge Aulicino], Fernando Sorrentino, Rodolfo Alonso, Norberto Belgue [Daniel Guebel] and Jorge Monteleone. The Situation of Art the title of the survey that opened the first issue with particular emphasis on poetry, but without omitting contemporary narrative, theatre, plastic arts and music, were the focus of its attention; but it also gave rise to the circulation and review of critical and theoretical materials. The attention to the production of the present and the dissemination and theoretical debate were, in the years of the civil-military dictatorship during which the magazine circulated, undeniably political spaces. In this sense, Nova Arte s claim to be independent implied, as in the case of other publications with which it maintains ties and exchanges, understanding its function as an organ of aesthetic and political agitation that far exceeded its pages: it was then a group of people who do things permanently, to activate development and controversy in the field of culture ( A Year of Activity, II, 4). Nova Arte thus resumes a conception of the functions and modes of intervention of cultural magazines that finds its roots in the magazines of the historical avant-gardes, and that in those years of the civil-military dictatorship is updated to articulate networks of exchange and support that sometimes appear in an ephemeral and necessarily changing way. The convergence between Nova Arte and Ulises, which defines its new identity by triple opposition to the official voice of Revista Nacional de Cultura, to the para-official voice expressed by Pájaro de Fuego, and to those of the underground without reference to any particular title expresses in a single gesture the precise definition of its reading in the field of contemporary magazines it sought to intervene in and the ambitiousness of its attempt. Issues 3 and 4 of Nova Arte included separate issues with unpublished texts, of which we unfortunately have no copy. The first, Enrique Zattara tells us, included unpublished texts by Roland Barthes translated by Jorge Montgomery, and a report on Erich Fromm; the second, texts by Roland Barthes corresponding to his courses at the Collège de France.
