British author Francis J. Horner spent 14 years in educational work in Japan before joining the British Embassy in China, from where he was captured & imprisoned by the invading Japanese, then repatriated in 1942 to England, where he continued in service to the Foreign Office. 260 pgs, in 2 parts. Part 1 reviews the influence of Shinto, Buddhism & Christianity during pre- modern Japan, the Imperial tradition, 16th century Europe impact, isolation stance of the Tokugawa shogunate, and, mid-19th century revival of Shintoism and restoration of the Emperor. Part 2, based on it's cultural heritage, is Horner's projection, including his personal experiences that although Japan past is unique, noting that "General MacArthur made no secret of his hopes of seeing, not only adoption of democracy by of Japan, but also the Christian faith" (see page 248) --- though not expressed, the author sees that hope likely. A List of Papal Encyclicals and Pronouncements follows the Glossary. The book is a thorough attempt to know Japan and concludes on a humanistic up note: ". when the psychology of Japanese had been analysed, it might perhaps be found that their behavior did not, in actual fact, differ very much from our own."
