HORRY, Colonel [Peter] and WEEMS, M[ason] L. The Life of Gen. Francis Marion: The Most Celebrated Partisan Officer in the Revolutionary War against the British and Tories, in South Carolina and Georgia. New-York: P.M. Davis, 1835. 252pp. Frontis., plates. Orig. calf-backed marbled boards. Front outer hinge cracked but holding, boards rubbed, spine ends abraded, light scattered foxing, else very good. HOWES H-650, "General Horry furnished the facts, Parson Weems the rhetoric; so much of it that Horry became indignant and disclaimed all connection with the book. Unabashed, Weems continued its publication through many editions." A later edition of the biography of Francis "Swamp Fox" Marion, compiled from information supplied by Gen. Peter Horry and written by the famed parson Mason Weems. Marion was a hero of the Revolution, and it was largely due to his actions and strategy that the turning point was reached in the South.
