"[The book] is a frosty mug full of sound advice for turning passion into a great business." - Tony Hsieh, New York Times bestselling author. ".Every entrepreneur and aspiring entrepreneur will find useful and sage advice between the covers of [the book] - and Jim's personality, wisdom, and sense of humor come through in his writing as crystal clear as a pint of Sam Adams Lager." - Sam Calagione, President and Founder of Dogfish Head Craft Brewery. "Like Steve Jobs, Bill Gates, Larry Ellison, and the other greats, Jim Koch's entrepreneurial journey is motivated by a deep commitment to making superb products and building a unique culture that reinforces innovation and risk-taking. This book tells a compelling story about how he did it. The lessons will be invaluable for anyone starting a business or building a career." - Bill Hambrecht, Cofounder of Hambrecht & Quisat and Chairman of WR Hambrecht & Co. "This is an engaging and well-written blend of stories from a beloved company's founding and sound guidance on surmounting common dilemmas faced in business and in life." - Publishers Weekly. "Pull up a chair and crack open a Sam Adams. It's time to leave behind business as you know it. Jim Koch is the founder of The Boston Beer Company, brewer of Samuel Adams Boston Lager, and key catalyst of the American craft beer revolution. Now he offers his unique perspective when it comes to business, beer, and turning your passion into a successful company or career. In 1984, it looked like an un-winnable David and Goliath struggle: one guy against the mammoth American beer industry. When others scoffed at Jim Koch's plan to leave his consulting job and start a brewery that would set out to challenge American palates, he chose a nineteenth-century family recipe and launched Samuel Adams. Now one of America's leading craft brewers, Samuel Adams has helped redefine the way Americans think about beer. In [the book], Koch offers unprecedented insights into the whirlwind ride from scrappy start-up to admired public company. His innovative business model and refreshingly frank stories offer counterintuitive lessons that you can apply to business and to life. Koch covers everything from finding your own Yoda to his theory on how a piece of string can teach you the most important lesson you'll ever learn about business. He also has surprising advice on sales, marketing, hiring, and company culture. Koch's anecdotes, quirky musings, and bits of wisdom go far beyond brewing. A fun, engaging guide for building a career or launching a successful business based on your passions, [the book] is the key to the ultimate dream: being successful while doing what you love. So, are you quenching your own thirst - or someone else's?" - from the inner front and rear jacket flaps.

A filmmaker with a diverse background in music, drama and television, Hill proved to be a popular storyteller in a variety of genres. His films are tied to important American themes and reflect an ironic, bittersweet vision of life. The book begins with a discussion of the way Hill's films often make their most important statements on the subtextual level. The stories entertain, but the subtext is often disturbing, contradictory, unresolved. Hill felt that all of his major characters create an environment, a fantasy, an illusion, and then go on to make it happen. It continues by tracing the thematic characteristics that are consistent with Hill's depiction of protagonists who create their own environments and then attempt to inhabit them. Then, individual chapters study in detail the art, craft and style of each of his films, including Period of Adjustment, Toys in the Attic, The World of Henry Orient, Hawaii, Thoroughly Modern Millie, Slaughterhouse Five, The Great Waldo Pepper, Slap Shot, A Little Romance, The World According to Garp, The Little Drummer Girl, Funny Farm, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, The Sting" ; Andrew Horton is the Jeanne H. Smith Professor of Film and Video Studies at the University of Oklahoma. He is an award-winning screenwriter who has written for American, Greek, New Zealand, Russian, Hungarian, and Norwegian productions. ; "As I get older, I get more didactic. I say what I really think. I don't hide ideas like Easter eggs for people to find. Now, if I have an idea, when something becomes clear to me, I don't embed it in a novel; I simply write it out in an essay as clearly as I can?"--George Roy Hill ; photos of Robin Williams, Paul Newman, Jane Fonda, Jim Hutton, Tony Franciosa, Dean Martin, Yvette Mimieux, Geraldine Page, Peter Sellers, Tippy Walker Marie Spaeth, Max von Sydow, Julie Andrews, Robert Redford, Michael Sacks, Michael Ontkean, Laurence Olivier, Diane Lane, Thelonius Bernard, John Lithgow, Glenn Close, Mary Beth Hurt ; FINE/VG. Copia autografata
Hardcover. Condizione: Fine. Limited Edition. No. 36 of 110 copies, oblong quarto, 22 leaves (printed on rectos only). Wood engravings (as opposed to wood carvings) are produced by practicing "the exacting art of hand engraving in endgrain hardwood" (n.b., quote from the Colophon). This book a collection of seventeen stunning wood engravings by various artists, each printed and signed below the plate by the artist. Gale Mueller (who signed the essay page "In the Beginning.") invited the artists "to submit an edition of engravings on the title theme of 'surroundings, ' and the variety of responses shows the versatility of wood engraving as a medium" (ibid). The theme of "Surroundings" is explained by Mueller in the essay which focuses on the glacial history and forces which created the beauty seen in nature, which now "provide a tapestry of tranquility for the creative processes." The artists included are: Carl Montford, Sylvia Pixley, Jim Horton, Dale Kennedy, Lezle Williams, Earl Nitschke, Michael McGarvey, Abigail Rorer, Judith Jaidinger, James Todd, Richard Wagener, Carol Inderieden, William Andrew Myers, Andy English, Mary Thompson, Richard Franklin, and Gale Mueller.
