Harold Campbell, Wally Campbell, Bill Mair and Arthur Thynne were bonded by their ties to the Campbell family and Argyle, the Campbell property near Wellington, NSW. Harold and Wally were brothers, Bill was their father's half brother and Arthur was employed as a farm hand on the property. They all joined the AIF (Harold with the 3rd Battalion, Wally in the 24th Company of the Army Service Corps, Bill - a veteran of the Boer War - enlisted in the 2nd Battalion before transferring to the 54th Battalion, and later after injury and recuperation became a reinforcement of the 33rd Battalion, and Arthur served with the 20th Battalion and the 2nd Pioneer Battalion) and wrote constantly of their experiences. Through their letters, the reader gains an understanding of the type of men these four soldiers were, the hardships endured and their contribution to the war. In addition, the letters include much information on the everyday life of the soldiers and military practices.…

He saw service in Egypt, Gallipoli, France, England and Belgium. He was involved in the Battles of Lone Pine, Poziere, Bullecourt and Third Ypres and was killed at Passchendaele. These letters reflect the thoughts and experiences of a young man at war. Included are Jack's military service record, his victory medal letter and details of what happened to his mates.
