Müller gab den ersten Band 1780 heraus, Monnard schloss 1851 [seinen französischen Originaltext] ab. In dieser Zeit blieben sich die Vaterlandsliebe und die Methode gleich. Die Methode ging darauf aus, den Stoff aus den ersten Quellen zu sammeln, mit Seelenkunde und Sittlichkeit auszutiefen und in einer Darstellung von geschmackvoller und gepflegter Form aufquellen zu lassen. Nach Temperament, Schärfe, Kritik und Gesichtspunkten unterschieden sich die Verfasser; über allen lag der Hauch einer grossen klassischen Überlieferung.
