Paperback. Condizione: Good. From the early Gaels to Hugh Leonard, Irish people have been seducing, cajoling, stalking, obsessing, throwing jealous fits, begging marriage, urging adultery, mourning lost loves, plotting new loves, threatening to kill themselves, and addressing moving last words to loved ones before going to their deaths all through the medium of the written word. Straight from the Heart is both a beautiful gift book and a piece of fascinating social history. It comprises more than 60 love letters ranging in time from 1694 to 1998. Bridget Houricans brilliant selection includes Yeats to Maud Gonne, correspondence between the tragic Francis Sheehy Skeffington and his wife Hannah as well as that between James Joyce and Nora Barnacle. Three of the 1916 leaders, Thomas McDonagh, Joseph M Plunkett and Eamonn Ceannt are here as well as Michael Collins, John Millington Synge and George Bernard Shaw. It even includes a love letter from Eamonn DeValera to his wife Sinead. Most touchingly we have a letter from Patrick Kavanagh to Hilda Moriarty, the beauty for whom he wrote Raglan Road. The book also includes some ordinary people - letters from the Front and from emigrants writing home to their sweethearts - and these are often as eloquent and heartbreaking as those written by the literati or historical giants as love can raise any man (or woman) to passion. The book has been read but remains in clean condition. All pages are intact and the cover is intact. Some minor wear to the spine.…

Hardcover. Condizione: new. Hardcover. June 1849: Dr William Wilde, passing a wretched hovel in Dublins Liberties, discovers James Clarence Mangan in a state of indescribable misery and squalor. Aged just 46, the man dubbed Irelands National Poet is about to succumb to the cholera epidemic that is gripping famine ravaged Ireland. August 2008: Writer Bridget Hourican encounters Mangan during a Liberties lock-in with that other great Irish poet, Shane MacGowan, who found inspiration in Mangans poetry. Alcoholic, opium addict, Romantic, Famine poet, Dublin street character and hero of James Joyce, the mercurial Mangan begins to obsess Bridget. The surviving biographical material - scant, subjective, sometimes falsified - both fascinates and frustrates her and she determines to find him. Who was this Baudelaire of The Liberties this lurker in Irish history whose enigmatic presence helped determine its course? As the lines between research and real life become blurred, Bridget starts to notice aspects of her life bleeding into Mangans. An obsession becomes a haunting and she realises that the only way to truly reach Mangan is to reckon with her own ghosts. Finding Mangan resurrects Irelands most enigmatic literary figuring, restoring his rightful place in the national consciousness. Imaginative and absorbing, at last Mangan has found the perfect biographer. John Banville A new, shapeshifting approach to biography . . . It reads like a dream. Roy Foster I adored the writing. Its fizzing energy. Its spinning clarity. Its openhearted rigour. Alan McMonagle An absorbing and innovative biography of Irelands national poet by a new literary talent. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.…
