Hardcover. Blue cloth/boards; silver lettering. No dj. vii + 361 pp. followed by 79 pp. bw illus. and 1 bw map. Published essentially unchanged from the author's dissertation (1975). Part of this publishers' series titled "Outstanding Dissertations in The Fine Arts". This was the first study of these sculptures, almost all of which were destroyed during times of riot and war. Discusses in detail each of the sixteen existing complete statues, and examines the major remnants that have been unearthed. Stylistically, these statues as a whole form the basic body for understanding Classical Greek freestanding sculpture. Also includes, in the introduction, an updated list of references (published since this dissertation). Most of the techinical information and ALL of the footnote information found in this volume are lacking in the book later published by this author titled "Greek Monumental Bronze Sculpture". A most important study in this field. Houser also wrote a book, Greek Monumental Bronze Sculpture, with photography by David Finn, published by Vendome Press, in 1983, for which this thesis may have been the precursor. Fine but for owner's name/date on ffep (former professor of classical art).
