He helped bring a generation of post-war British artists to international attention. Russell also edited the Century Bulletin on behalf of The Century Association in 1981 and 2006, a New York organization of some two-thousand authors and artists. Russell wore two masks as an art critic: He was a champion of newer, younger artists like David Hockney and Howard Hodgkin, and was also an accomplished scholar of the Impressionists and subsequent modern movements. He spent the bulk of his medical career as a professor of neurology at Yeshiva University's Albert Einstein College of Medicine.
