It has been published continuously…since its first issue in 1888, nine months after the Society itself was founded. It primarily contains articles about geography, history, and world culture. The magazine is known for its The magazine is known for its thick square-bound glossy format with a yellow rectangular border and its extensive use of dramatic photographs. The magazine's metamorphosis was engineered by its first full-time editor, Gilbert H. Grosvenor. One of Grosvenor's earliest legacies was the use of first-person narrative and straightforward, simple writing. By 1910 the magazine also was distinguished by the growing use of photographs and its cover had adopted the border of oak and laurel leaves, acorns and hemispheres that characterized it for the next six decades. The magazine is published monthly, and some map supplements are also included with subscriptions. On occasion, special editions of the magazine are issued. The first issue of National Geographic Magazine was published on September 22, 1888, nine months after the Society was founded. Starting with its January 1905 publication of several full-page pictures of Tibet in 1900-1901, the magazine changed from being a text-oriented publication closer to a scientific journal to featuring extensive pictorial content, and became well known for this style. This issue has articles on the Glaciers and Snowfields of British Columbia by Howard Palmer (with 25 illustrations), Where Women Vote by Baroness Alletta Korff, Costa Rica--Vulcan's Smithy by H. Pittier (with 32 illustrations), The Erratic by O. A. Ljungstedt (with 6 illustrations), A Primitive Gryoscope in Liberia by G. N. Collins (illustrated), and European Tributes to Peary (illustrated). Henri François Pittier de Fabrega (August 13, 1857, Bex, Switzerland - January 27, 1950, Caracas, Venezuela) was a Swiss-born geographer and botanist. He graduated as an engineer from the University of Jena and moved to Costa Rica in 1887, where he founded the Physical Geographic Institute and an herbarium. Pittier arrived in Venezuela in 1917, where he classified more than 30,000 plants and devoted many years to studying the flora and fauna in the country. Henri Pittier National Park was the first national park established in Venezuela. The plant genera Pittiera (now considered a synonym of Polyclathra), Pittierella (now considered a synonym of Cryptocentrum) and Pittierothamnus (now considered a synonym of Amphidasya) are named after him. His name is also associated with Pittier's crab-eating rat, Ichthyomys pittieri.Guy N. Collins (August 19, 1872 - August 14, 1938) was an American botanist, plant explorer, and geneticist. He studied in Liberia and Puerto Rico with Orator Fuller Cook, and later became Principal Botanist in the USDA Division of Cereal Crops and Diseases. Collins was born in the hamlet of Mertensia, New York on August 19, 1872, and attended Syracuse University before dropping out to pursue botanical studies with Cook. He was close friends with David Fairchild. He died on August 14, 1938, from endocarditis, an infection of the heart. O. A. Ljungstedt was on the staff of the U. S. Geological Survey.
