Mezzotint with engraved faux frame, early scratched letter state, publication date trimmed off at foot, some damage to title, Earl Howe was commander in chief North America during the American War of Independence and became First Lord of the Admiralty. He commanded the Channel fleet at the victory against the French on 1 June 1794, known as the 'Glorious First of June', the first battle of the war against the Revolutionary government. Copley painted this portrait following this victory.
