British military intervention to save Greece from Axis occupation was muddled, disorganised, inadequate and eventually unsuccessful and costly. Co-author Vice Admiral Baillie-Grohman was assigned to evacuate the crumbling British and Empire troops from Greece, in another but lesser-known Dunkirk, while Hackstall-Smith was closely involved in the operation as CO of a prototype landing craft sunk during the evacuation. This is an excellent account of this tragic operation, with a high cost in lives, ships and the adverse impact the Greek experience had on subsequent Allied operations in the Mediterranean and North Africa. First edition of 1961, 240 pages including bibliography, list of Allied units assigned to Greece and ships involved in the evacuation, index, 12 b/w photos, folded maps at back. Blue hard covers with gilt spine titles VG+, text block excellent, no inscriptions, authors' explanatory note tipped in at half-title. Unclipped pictorial DJ also VG+ with two small chips top edge at spine and rear. First editions in this condition are scarce.
