Born in 1924, Raj studied in Lahore and gained first working practice at the Punjab Public Works Department. He completed his education by working with engineering firms in the US and degrees he took from University of Minnesota and Columbia University, New York in 1955-59. He established his independent practice in New Delhi in 1960.Many of Raj's structures are recognised as monuments narrating the history of energetic nation building in post-independence India. Some of them are unique, such as the Hall of Nations and Industries (New Delhi, 1972) with its large-span concrete space frame, the Hindon River Mill (Ghaziabad, 1973) with a series of bowstring concrete arches. Especially during the 1980s, Raj designed further innovative, groundbreaking structures, most notably the NCDC Office (New Delhi, 1980) and the State Trading Corporation building (New Delhi, 1988).The Structure features twenty-eight of Mahendra Raj's buildings from all periods of his career in detail and richly illustrated with photographs and colour reproductions of archival plans as well as selected sections and plans. Mit Verve konnten sie 2006 und 2007 zwei herausragende Bauten, die in der Fachwelt hohe Anerkennung fanden, realisieren: das Gemeindeverwaltungszentrum in Affoltern am Albis und die Festhütte in Amriswil, ein konzentrischer Bau, der die Stimmung eines Festzelts treffend wiedergibt. In der Folge sind mehrere Wohnanlagen wie etwa die stimmige Siedlung Frohheim in Zürich-Affoltern und die viel beachtete Kalkbreite in Zürich entstanden, die aus einem neuartigen genossenschaftlichen Konzept über einer Trameinstellhalle errichtet wurden. Aber auch öffentliche Bauten wie das Kunstfreilager Dreispitz in Basel oder das Gemeindehaus in Volketswil erregten Aufmerksamkeit. Im vorliegenden Band werden 18 Bauten und Projekte der vergangenen 16 Jahren anhand von Texten, Plänen und Abbildungen ausführlich dargestellt. Weitere 21 Objekte sind mit Texten und ein bis zwei Abbildungen innerhalb des Werkverzeichnisses beschrieben. In 2001, Pascal Müller and Peter Sigrist, who died in 2014, founded their architectural office in Zurich. Their dynamism led them to construct two exceptional buildings in 2006 and 2007, which were highly regarded by experts: the municipal administration centre in Affoltern am Albis and the festival cabin in Amriswil, a concentric structure that fittingly reflects the atmosphere of a festive tent. Since then, several residential developments have followed, such as the coherent Frohheim estate in Zurich-Affoltern and the widely regarded Kalkbreite in Zurich, which was developed over a tram garage and was the result of a new cooperative concept. Public buildings such as the Kunstfreilager Dreispitz in Basel and the Volketswil community centre also attracted attention.
