Tall thick 8vo. xxxii, 576 pp. Tan buckram, red & black & gilt morocco spine labels (some scuffing, edgewear, very minor shelfwear), still NF copy, from the library of Progressive Era Portland, OR attorney, Carl J. Smith. Fourth edition, substantially revised & expanded, of the first work on automobile law and decisions published in the United States, with substantial revisions due to court decisions after 1906 removing the automobile from being classified as an agency dangerous per se and classed with combustibles, explosives, inflammable substances, and fire arms, as well as removing owner liability from accidents or acts committed by chauffeur, or borrower of the automobile. This edition expands upon the idea that automobile manufacturers were required now to place reliable and safe equipment on their machines, but also addressed the exploding use of automobiles as common carriers, or "Jitneys," as well as increased legal decisions regarding automobile and driver specific insurance coverage.
