Soft cover. Condizione: Very Good. Signed by one of the authors in black ink on front cover: "Compliments of H. B. Crothers." Original publisher's beige paper wrappers. No date, circa 1942. 6 3/4" x 10." Sixty-two pages, complete. Pages are virtually pristine and intact except for light age toning and slightly bumped corners. Co…vers are very clean and intact except for a black ink stamp on front, a few small marks and smudges, slightly bumped corners, and a small pencil inscription on back. A Very Good copy. "Reprinted from The Journals of Southern History, Vol. III, No. 1, February, 1942." This pamphlet contains a paper by authors Hayes Baker Crothers and Ruth Allison Hudnut about the Battle of Jumonville Glen that took place on May 28, 1754 and John Shaw's account of the battle. In the "Summary" section of the paper, the authors state, "The foregoing analysis has endeavored to show the truth or falsity of the John Shaw Affidavit by comparing it with contemporary accounts and documents. The summary will balance pros and cons in an effort to determine validity, how Shaw obtained his information, and whether he was actually a member of Washington's expedition." Crothers and Hudnut argue that Shaw's account is accurate overall but has many parts that are untrue or questionable. They do conclude that Shaw was likely part of George Washington's expedition which was sent by British Governor Robert Dinwiddie to venture into the disputed Ohio Country and assess the French military situation there. However, the authors still question the exact identity of Shaw, even though he stated in the affidavit (containing his account) that he was an Irish sailor, and narrow his identity to either a Virginian landowner or sailor of the same name about twenty years of age. The authors delve into various parts of Shaw's account and compare them with other accounts of the time to try to clarify the details of what exactly happened at the Battle of Jumonville Glen. This battle marked the beginning of the French and Indian War (1754-1763). The battle began when, during their expedition, Washington, his party of provincial Virginian soldiers, and a small band of Mingo warriors led by Sachem Tanacharison (also known as the "Half King") ambushed a small group of French Canadians led by French commander Joseph Coulon de Jumonville. Jumonville was killed but the exact details of his death are still a point of controversy to this day. In his account, Shaw says that Tanacharison killed Jumonville with a tomahawk. Tanacharison was decidedly anti-French at this time given the ongoing tensions between Indigenous Peoples, the French, and the British in the disputed Ohio Country and surrounding areas. Most of Jumonville's men were captured, but some of them were killed. Only one man escaped, but he managed to alert the others French Canadians at nearby Fort Duquesne about what had happened. In the aftermath, Washington retreated to Fort Necessity and was forced to surrender to French Canadian soldiers from Fort Duquesne. The French Canadians then forced Washington to sign a statement, the text of which was in French, admitting to the assassination of Jumonville and his men (Washington likely did not fully understand the document's terms because he was not fluent in French). Predictably, the Battle of Jumonville Glen escalated the tensions between France and England. The authors also highlight this battle because it was one of the Washington's first battles; he was only 22 years old at the time. Signed by Author(s).
