Soft cover. Condizione: Very Good. 1st Budding Book Edition. Paperback. From town to country, from the London suburbs to leafy rural backwaters, Surrey is a special place at Christmas time - and this book captures all the magic of the season through the centuries. The county has seen some strange Christmases - hard weather, local scandals, persecution and strife. But there have also been the happy times, the good cheer and carols and wassailing, and it is the spirit of these that pervades this book. We read of those legendary Victorian winters when the frost was so hard that ice parties could be thrown on the Thames at Richmond, of the diariest John Evelyn's determination to keep aglow the light of Christmas in Puritan times, of Mrs. Beeton's festive recipes, of traders and paupers, charlatans and soldiers and life in the great country houses. Best of all, recollection of Christmas in our own lifetime lead us down memory lane, and echoes of our childhood years mingle with this book's rich cast of festive characters to enliven many an evening round a blazing fire. Illustrated. 152 pp. (We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. academic and scholarly books and Modern First Editions ,and all types of Academic Literature.).…
