Huerta is an associate professor in the Drama Department at the University of California, San Diego. Professor Huerta, who received his Ph.D. in 1974 from the University of California, Santa Barbara, has published three books (A Bibliography of Chicano and Mexican Dance, Drama and Music, 1971; El Teatro de la Esperanza: An Anthology of Chicano Drama, 1973; and Nuevos Pasos: Chicano and Puerto Rican Drama, 1979), as well as numerous articles in Aztlán, Latin American Theatre Review, Revista Chicano-Riqueña, Textual, The Drama Review, The Oxford Companion to the Theatre, and other journals and publications. In 1971 he founded El Teatro de la Esperanza, of which he was the artistic director until 1975. Among the plays Dr. Huerta has directed are Los vendidos, Guadalupe, A View from the Bridge, and Las dos caras del patroncito. He is the author of the dramas E/ renacimiento de Huitzilopochtli and La L/orona, The Many Faces of a Legend and participated in the collective creation of the docudrama Guadalupe. A founding member in 1971 of the national theater network TENAZ, El Teatro Nacional de Aztlán, he has served on its board of directors since its inception.
