This volume has an engraved frontis facing title page, engraved title page, both of which are stained, thirty-one copper engravings, some of costume design, plus 16 pages of wood engravings showing different coats of arms for the trades, plus wood cuts of churches within text. I am assuming this is complete. I have collated the book and the pages are complete. (Using the web site Jsic, the Stratford version has thirty-three engraved plates, one of which is folded. Page numbers exactly the same. Unfortunately details regarding collation for this volume is not available.) Both boards are detached, spine holding but the leather has disintegrated on the spine. There is no printed title page now, if there ever was one. The text appears to be complete, and is generally clean and free of foxing. Some of the plates have browning, foxing and or damp stain, mostly in the margins. SEE PHOTOS. This is offered as a candidate for rebinding, or as a breaker for the plates (engraved views), of which there are at least 29. (At the time this was catalogued, a Google search revealed that several of these same plates were being offered elsewhere for £25 each). Among the full-page engravings are: Entrance to London at Mile End; Entrance to London at Shoreditch; Bengeo Church, with part of Hertford; Rye House, Herts.; Wormley Bury; Barnet; Column at Hadley, near Barnet; the Obalds, Herts.; Waltham Cross; Tilbury Port; Waltham Abbey; Powder Mills, Waltham Abbey; Chingford; Woodford; Hackney; Entrance to London from Islington; Hornsey; Enfield; Trent Place; Little Stanmore; Harrow; Hampton Court Palace; Pittshanger, Great Ealing; Isleworth; Chiswick; Chiswick Gardens; Fulham; Chelsea Hospital; Military Asylum, Chelsea. The text is also of much interest. For example, here is Hughson's description of Belmont Castle (pages 207-208): "Belmont Castle, most delightfully situated, one mile from Grays, was the property and residence of the late Zachariah Button, Esq. who finished it in a costly style of Gothic architecture. The building contains, besides other convenient apartments, a circular neatly furnished room, called the Round Tower, from whence there are the most delightful prospects of the river Thames, of the shipping, for many miles, and of the rich Kentish inclosures, to the hills beyond the great Dover road. An elegant drawing room, with circular front, highly encircled; a cheerful entrance hall, finished with Gothic mouldings, niches for figures or lamps, and paved with stone, and black marble dots; a spacious eating room, finished with a highly enriched cornice, grey stucco sides, and Gothic mouldings; a beautiful chimney piece, and wainscot floor; the library is oval shaped, and very elegantly fitted up and finished with Gothic book cases and mouldings; from this room a double flight of handsome stone steps descend to the terrace, fronting the great lawn and in full view of the river. The large and very excellent kitchen garden, is encompassed with lofty walls, clothed and planted with a choice selection of the best fruit trees, and a capital hot house. Surrounding the house, are the pleasure grounds, which are beautifully and tastefully disposed, and ornamented with very valuable forest trees, shrubs, and plants, terminating towards the west by a Gothic temple, and towards the east by an orchard and paddock. There are two approaches to the house, the one by the neat brick Gothic lodge, through the great south lawn, from the road between West Thurrock and Grays; and the other from the village of Stifford, by the north lawn.". David Hughson (c. 1760s 1820s), the pen name of Edward Pugh, was a writer on the topography and history of London. Best known for the above work which he prepared from "an actual perambulation" (a real walk) of the city. The work was first published between 1805 and 1809 by James Stratford of Holborn in 149 parts of about 24 pages each for binding into six volumes. After Stratford, it was also published by Joseph Robins of Tooley Street and parts by J. Robins of Ivy Lane, Paternoster Row. The engravings are mostly by Ambrose Warren from works by Robert Blemmell Schnebbelie and Edward Gyfford. Other engravers who contributed were William Woolnoth, John Roffe and J. S. Storer US$366.

This copy (with a bookseller's ticket to…the rear paste-down) has been attractively rebound in half green calf and cloth with gilt lettering to the spine, and is in very good condition. The frontispiece shows the worst spotting, some pages are tanned, pp149 and 289 particularly so, most pages are good. Cagle notes: 'First edition thus, London, 1817. This work, as A W Oxford, p.145, notes is an abbreviated edition of The Family Receipt-Book, (Anon, 3rd edition ca 1814). Hughson's name is not associated with the earlier work, which was published by a different publisher, and it appears he was the preparer of this version but not necessarily the earlier one. BMC ( British Museum General Catalogue 1955) records David Hughson, LLD, as the pseudonym of David Pugh, author of several salty nineteenth century books about London. NUC ( National Union Catalogue, Pre-1956 Imprints Chicago, 1968-1980) states that David Hughson is the pseudonym of Edward Pugh, the same author BMC refers to as David Pugh, and includes The New Family Receipt Book among his works. Both BMC and NUC enter the earlier work, The Family Receipt-Book, under title'. Edward Pugh was a writer on the topography and history of London. Recipes for 'Domestic Economy, Medical Receipts, and other Desiderata for Household Arrangement' sit alongside each other and provide a perspective on early eighteenth century life. A truly remarkably book with recipes for Fine French Bread, Prime Irish Usquebaugh (an alcoholic cordial), essence of American Spruce for making beer, "Spruce Beer from the process adopted by the famous Captain Cook", Best Brunswick Sausages, Manner of destroying caterpillars on Gooseberry Bushes in Scotland, "French Citizens' Soup', Sir John Hill's Specific for the Scurvy, To dress a turtle after the West India manner', diet drink for Ricketts, French Fricassee of Frogs, Turkish method of filtering water by Ascension, successful treatment of frozen limbs by the Russians, easy manner of always obtaining sufficient supplies of fresh water at sea, genuine Indian method of cooking a curry, art of manufacturing the fine red and yellow morocco leather as practised in Crim Tartary, genuine method of making Cheshire Cheese etc. Bitting p.237, Cagle 766, Axford p.294 and Oxford p.145.
