L. erhielt seine erste Ausbildung wahrscheinlich in der Malerwerkstatt seines Vaters, dem er 1504 erwiesenermassen bei der Arbeit half. Es folgte eine Gesellenwanderung, bevor L. die Malerwerkstatt des Vaters übernahm. Da grössere Aufträge ausblieben, kämpfte L. 1515 in der Schlacht von Marignano mit und trat im selben Jahr in verbotenen Solddienst bei Hzg. Ulrich von Württemberg, wofür er vor Gericht gestellt wurde. Als der Maler mit ansehen musste, wie im Bildersturm von 1523 ein Grossteil seines ausschliesslich sakralen Frühwerks und fast das gesamte Schaffen seines Vaters zerstört wurde, stellte er sich gegen den neuen Glauben und verlegte wohl seinen Arbeitsort ins kath. Luzern (Wandmalereien im Klauserhaus 1523, heute im Schweiz. Landesmuseum). 1526-27 versöhnte sich L. offenbar mit den veränderten Verhältnissen und schloss sich den ref. Zürchern an. Beruflich verlegte er sich auf die neue Gattung der Landschaftsmalerei. Der in der religiösen Kunst des MA verwurzelte Maler stellte die Natur wie durch den Schleier eines schwärmer., pantheist. Gefühls gesehen dar. Darin gleichen seine qualitativ hochstehenden Zeichnungen und Leinwandbilder den Werken der dt. Donauschule um Hans Baldung und Albrecht Altdorfer. 1531 nahm L. an den gescheiterten Friedensverhandlungen in Aarau teil, starb aber kurz darauf im 2.
