Aggiungi al carrello8vo. 3¾ pages on bifolium. In French. According to an early collector's note, the present letter was written to his friend Ernst Weyden, a scholar and member of the Faculty at the University of Cologne. ("I am very sensitive to your good wishes for my 40th birthday, which can be summarized for me in one thing: that the woman who has been absolutely devoted to me and who has become both the root and the flower of my life, be kept for me. Thanks be to Heaven that I have every reason to hope that this supreme wish of my heart will be granted - and from the news I have found here it is very likely that in a few months my marriage will take place [.]" (transl.). - Liszt is grateful to Weyden for having reported on his brochure on Lohengrin and Tannhäuser in the Kölnische Zeitung. "It is to be presumed that my brochure will contribute to spreading the understanding of Wagner's works, which, in order to be greatly admired, only need to be understood from a higher point of view than one is accustomed to judge ordinary operas. You have thus done art a service, as well as me, by contributing your share to the propagation of these two eminent works of which Germany will be able one day to be proud [.]". Liszt treasures his memories of their architectural trip and hopes that they will one day resume their peregrinations: "In the meantime, please do not forget our collaboration project in honour of the Duomo; I hope that you will be able to send me the stanzas I have requested before the end of the year [.]. - On blue paper. Slightly wrinkled, otherwise in good condition.

He also sends his Hungarian Rhapsody "properly instrument…ed" and asks Haslinger "to prepare a similar edition." Aggiungi al carrello8vo. (260 x 160 mm). 97 pp. First edition of Liszt's symphonic poem no. 3, inscribed and with annotations by the composer himself on the occasion of a joint concert with Richard Wagner and the conductor Heinrich Sczadrowsky, to whom Liszt inscribed this volume. On 23 November 1856 in St Gallen, Liszt himself conducted his sympho…nic poems "Orphée" and "Les Préludes", Sczadrowsky excerpts from Gluck operas (Armida and Iphiegénie en Aulide), and Wagner took the baton for Beethoven's "Eroica" Symphony. - On the verso of the front flyleaf Liszt gives the date and promises "Fortsetzung folgt!", adding an inscription to Sczwadrowsky at the top of the title-page. The back flyleaf has, in another hand (presumably that of Sczadrowsky): "Aufgeführt 23 Nov. 56 im 3ten Abonn. - In the same article, Sczadrowsky also cites this copy of the score as containing Liszt's own corrections to the first edition: "Bei der Gelegenheit mache ich auf einen im Stiche stehen gebliebenen sehr wesentlichen Fehler aufmerksam. - Franz Liszt was a pioneer of the symphonic poem and was the first composer to apply the term to his works. "Les Préludes" is the third of his thirteen compositions in this form, premiering in 1854. This 1856 first edition of the score is both a testimony to the composer's own interpretation of the work and a momento of a historic concert by two musical greats of the Romantic period. - Occasional underlinings in red pencil, stemming from the composer himself. Some light soiling and foxing. Binding rubbed, interior hinges cracking. Overall a handsome volume. - From the collection of the conductor Heinrich Sczadrowsky (1828-1878). - Humphrey Searle, The Music of Liszt (1966), no. 95. H. Sczadrowsky, "Musikalische Briefe aus der Schweiz: Franz Liszt und Richard Wagner im 3. Abonnement-Concert am 23. Nov. 1856 in St. Gallen", Neue Zeitschrift für Musik 47 (1856), pp. 95f.
