A Very Good copy. Bulletin No. 94 issued by the Bureau of Plant Industry, United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). The Bureau's director was B. T. Galloway. This report is about farming practices for forage crops in Western Oregon and Western Washington for the purpose of feeding farm animals. The report was written after author Byron Hunter completed a three-year study in Western Oregon and Western Washington about forage plants in the region. Hunter adds that the report contains information that he obtained while living in the Pacific Northwest over the course of thirty years. He writes that much of his research is based on his investigations in the Willamette Valley and Puget Sound region. The report discusses different subjects including farming methods such as curing hay and sowing seeds and specific types of forage plants such as hay, red clover, Alsike clover, common vetch, pearl vetch, field peas, alfalfa, rye grasses, orchard grass, meadow fescue, velvet grass, Indian corn, thousand-headed kale, and root crops.

Covers are very clean and intact except for moderate age toning and browning and slight wear to extremities. A Very Good, almost Near Fine copy. A report about farming with forage crops in Western Oregon and Western Washington by Byron Hunter, Assistant Agriculturist, Farm Management Investigations. This report was the result of thirty years' residence in the Pacific Northwest and nine years' residence in the Willamette Valley. The report addresses a number of subjects relating to the region. Hunter begins with a brief description of the Willamette Valley region (and other parts of Western Oregon and Western Washington) such as its climate and average monthly and annual rainfall. He talks about which crops do well in the region such as legumes and clover. There is brief discussion about hay, which Hunter says may be difficult to cultivate (he also talks about curing hay and haycaps). Then, Hunter talks about using silos. There is more discussion about legumes. He then proceeds to address forage crops, beginning with Red Clover. Among the other forage crops Hunter talks about are Alsike Clover, Common Vetch, Pearl Vetch, Field Peas, Alfalfa, Timothy grass, Rye-grasses, Orchard Grass, Meadow Fescue, Velvet Grass, Indian Corn, Thousand-headed Kale, root crops, and soiling (green-feeding) crops. Some of the descriptions of these crops are accompanied by explanations of how to sow them.

This book comprehensively explores commercial orcharding practices suitable for the irrigated regions of the Pacific Northwest, focusing particularly on the Columbia River Valley. The author, drawing upon the experiences of long-established farmers, provides practical guidance for both those new to the field and more experienced orchardists looking to expand or optimize their operations. This book delves into a broad range of topics, including soil preparation, grading, irrigation techniques, and the selection of suitable tree varieties. There are also discussions on the management of cover crops, windbreaks, and green manure, as well as strategies for mitigating the risks posed by spring frosts. The author emphasizes the importance of understanding the specific climatic and soil conditions of the region and tailoring practices to suit them. By following the advice in this book, orchardists can increase their chances of establishing and maintaining profitable orchards in this unique and promising agricultural landscape. This book provides a detailed treatment of methods for growing and using forage crops in the Pacific Northwest, specifically western Oregon and western Washington. The author draws on research conducted over many years, including three years of focused investigation into the topic. Given the mild winters and abundant rainfall of the region, forage crops thrive, yielding abundant harvests. Individual chapters focus on red clover, alsike clover, common vetch, pearl vetch, field peas, alfalfa, timothy, ryegrasses, orchard grass, meadow fescue, velvet grass, Indian corn, rape, and thousand-headed kale. The author emphasizes the importance of leguminous plants for enriching soil and reducing the need for fertilizer, and provides detailed instructions for inoculating the soil to ensure successful legume growth.
