2pp., 12mo. Very good, on lightly-aged paper. In worn envelope, with stamp and postmark, addressed by Martin to 'John T. Baron Esq | 48 Griffin Street | Witton | Blackburn'. He begins by explaining that he has 'had every minute so fully occupied of late', that he has not been able to comply with Baron's request. 'Lady Martin has… done what she is now most reluctant to do - written the name she once bore with a few lines from Cymbeline. I have copied the verse you wish from the little Bon Gaultier Poem'. He explains that this was written 'upon a remark actually made by a young friend of mine when looking over the odds & ends of gifts &c. that had accumulated in his drawers!'.

2pp., 12mo. On bifolium. Fair, on lightly-aged paper. In envelope, with stamp and postmarks, addressed to 'John J. Baron Esqr. | 48 Griffin St. | Witton | Blackburne | Lancashire'. Although Hazlitt's handwriting is legendarily attrocious, the reader escapes lightly on this occasion. Hazlitt regrets that he has no copy of either…of the books Baron names, as he 'printed only a few copies for presents. Nor have I any photograph of myself.' He is 'extremely glad that the perusal of my publications' has 'proved agreeable' to Baron. He will 'probably reprint some day the two volumes of verse with additions', and is at present 'bringing out a new edition of my Proverbs'.

2pp., 12mo. Bifolium. Good, on lightly-aged paper. In original stamped and postmarked envelope, addressed by Smiles. The 'last photographic likeness' of Smiles 'was taken by Mr S. A. Walker, 230 Regent Street W'. Smiles has 'no doubt' that Walker will let Bacon 'have a copy' (i.e. Bacon will not be getting a free copy from Smile…s). Smiles's book 'Physical Education' was 'published by me no less than 44 years ago. It had a small sale, and is now quite out of print. Though pretty good at the time, there are now far better works on the subject.'.

The recipient of the present letter is not named, but it is the scientific bookseller and publisher John Nourse (1705-1780), who the following year would published the 'Lectures' referred to in the letter: 'An Introduction to Physiology, being A Course of Lectures upon The most important Parts of the Animal Oeconomy', 'Printed f…or J. Nourse at the Lamb opposite Katherine-Street in the Strand. [1759]' An interesting letter, giving insight into the relationship between an eighteenth-century provincial medical author and his London publisher, with Flemyng instructing Nourse to procure books for his friends, commenting on work in hand, and asking how to receive news of a medical discovery. 3pp, 4to. Bifolium. Aged and worn, with thin strip of paper from mount adhering to reverse of second leaf, which carries an endorsement. Forty-two lines of text, addressed to an unnamed recipient. The letter begins: 'Sir | I wrote several weeks ago desiring you amongst other things to send for Mr Scholy an Apothecary herr Heister's surgery and [?] diseases of the Eyes; But as no parcel is come yet, we imagined through some mistake or other my Letter may have been misplaced. I likewise desire you to take that opportunity of sending in the same parcel Dr Monro's treatise on the Lymphatic for myself. The whole to be directed for me to the care of Mr Fore post-master of Brigg [where Flemyng resided]'. Should the recipient have any 'scrupull about sending Mr Scholeys Books without ready money, please signify it to me and he will write to his Druggist or some other friend to wait upon you for that purpose; and moreover I am desired by Mr Scholy to acquaint you that if the parcel is not yet sent off you will send, for him, along with the rest Brown's Translation of Gregory's Optics.' Turning to his 'Introduction to Physiology' Flemyng writes: 'As I wrote you in my last I shall be as good as my word in having my Lectures completed by the first of June, or perhaps a week or two later at most. Pray what is the safest and best way of transmitting the Parcel so as come safe? [last four words deleted] I shall be directed by you after you have considered the bulk of the work what sort of preface to make, or whether some account of the Contents by way of Index should be added, & whether it should be long or short'. Regarding the celebrated anatomist William Hunter (1718-1783) he continues: 'I hear of some Discovery Dr Hunter teacher of Anatomy has made concerning the Nerves, pray how can I be informed about it.' He ends in the hope that he will hear from him soon. From the distinguished autograph collection of the psychiatrist Richard Alfred Hunter (1923-1981), whose collection of 7000 works relating to psychiatry is now in Cambridge University Library. Hunter and his mother Ida Macalpine had a particular interest in the illness of King George III, and their book 'George III and the Mad Business' (1969) suggested the diagnosis of porphyria popularised by Alan Bennett in his play 'The Madness of George III'.

Totalling 16pp., 12mo. In very good condition, on lightly-aged paper. With two envelopes (both initaled 'G. L. C.') with Penny Red postage stamps and Belfast postmarks (13 and 25 January 1862), both addressed by Craik to 'John Hunter, Esq: | Craigcrook | by Edinburgh', also a similar envelope, with Belfast postmark dated 27 Augu…st 1861, addressed to Hunter at 'Robertson's Lodgings | 24 St. Stephen's Green North | Dublin'. Chatty, friendly letters in a crabbed, difficult hand. On 13 January 1862 Craik writes: 'I am very glad you have spoken to Dr. John Brown. I have rather a curious story to tell you about the getting up of the last edition of the Encyc. Brit. if there were time. I am so delighted thhat you agree with me about Price's article. I find it most people, - but it will work its way.' The letter of 23 January 1862 begins: 'My dear Hunter, | Here is Dodd's most characteristic and interesting letter, which I ought perhaps to have returned before. I hope the copy of my book has reached the N. B. [North British Review] by this time. To my surprise upon receiving a list of the copies sent out I found none for any of the quarterly Reviews. I have recommended strongly that copies should be sent at least to the Edinburgh, the Quarterly, and the Westminster.' The letter of 25 July 1861 largely concerns 'the Cardross Case'. One letter ('Friday p.m.') makes suggestions for a planned trip to Dublin by Hunter. Hunter was the son of Professor James Hunter (1745-1837), and nephew by marriage of the editor of the Edinburgh Review Francis Jeffrey (1773-1850). See Helen Watt, 'John Hunter, the Forgotten Tenant of Craigcrook' (Edinburgh, 1977).
