Soft cover. Condizione: Good. 1st Edition. BSHS Monographs No. 4. Corrected 1985 reprint of Michael Hunter's 1982 study of the early Royal Society. Octavo; v, 270 pages, with bibliographical references, appendices, and index. The copyright page states "First published 1982" and "Reprinted with corrections 1985." Library cataloging records likewise identify this issue as the corrected 1985 reprint. Hunter examines the Royal Society during its formative decades, focusing on its membership, organization, recruitment, attendance, subscriptions, leadership, and changing institutional fortunes. Rather than presenting only a narrative of scientific discoveries, the book studies who the Fellows were, how actively they participated, and how the Society developed into an enduring scientific institution. Subjects include the composition and social character of the membership and the roles of such figures as Robert Boyle, Robert Hooke, Henry Oldenburg, John Wilkins, Edmond Halley, and Samuel Pepys. Condition: Good. Green-and-white printed wrappers show general rubbing, scratching, handling wear, creasing, and wear along the edges and corners. Spine is creased and rubbed, with wear and small separations at the ends. Front cover has a small area of surface disturbance or old adhesive residue above the title. Rear cover has handwritten ink inventory or reference numbers near the upper-right corner, reading approximately "334 / 9421," with an additional small ink scribble. Rear wrapper also shows soiling, edge wear, and creasing near the upper edge. Binding remains intact. Interior pages appear clean and serviceable in the photographed portions, with mild age-toning and no substantial annotations observed. Michael Hunter is a major scholar of seventeenth-century British intellectual history, particularly the early Royal Society and Robert Boyle. This institutional and prosopographical study became an established reference in the field and was later issued in a substantially revised second edition in 1994. Carefully packed for shipment with protective wrapping and a sturdy box. USPS Media Mail is available within the United States; expedited and international shipping may be arranged at additional cost. Returns accepted in accordance with AbeBooks' return policies.
