Hardcover. Condizione: new. Hardcover. "Through his camera, we see a Mexico that is racked with pain and beset with poverty, but is buoyed by the perpetual engine of eroticism and the promise of spiritual grace." Chris WileyThis volume is the debut book of photographs by the late photographer and collector Michel Hurst (19482023). Made in and around his adopted home of Mexico City over a period of roughly six years, Orale's photographs pulse with the lifeblood of a country marred by suffering but consistently renewed by the promise of redemption. Through Hurst's lens, the reader absorbs ancient rituals and new cults, beauty and degradation, danger and tenderness, lust and longing. With the flinty eye of a hard-bitten street photographer and the soft touch of an aesthete, Hurst shows us not just Mexico but the human condition itself. This monograph includes an introduction by acclaimed photographer and activist Nan Goldin, an essay by New Yorker photography critic Chris Wiley and an afterword by Hurst's husband of 40 years, Robert Swope. Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. 1st Edition. First edition quarto hardcover in printed boards. Unpaginated with color + b/w photographic illustrations. Clean, internally unmarked, well bound. Ever so slightly askew, but hardly so and not effecting the integrity of binding or overall fell of the book. Very lightly rubbed at corners, but hardly noticeable, with a bit of heavier rubbing to the bottom edges of the boards. Slight minimal shelfwear elsewhere to extremities, now protected in cut mylar. Photobook edited by Michel Hurst and Robert Swope, the latter who in the early 2000's found a box of photographs at a New York City flea market containing the work of Andrea Susan, official photographer of the weekend retreat Casa Susanna in Jewett, New York - a secret gathering place for cross-dressing men and trans women in the 50's-60's. Consisting of affirming, ordinary candid and portrait photos of visitors to the retreat in feminine attire in the midst of various social activities, the photographs were originally bestowed to Susan's mentor and later discarded before ending up at the flea market. These are early, rare examples of photographs made by and for trans women / cross dressing men for purposes beyond the fetishistic, erotic, and otherwise sensational. The publication of this book would eventually inspire actor, playwright and screenwriter Harvey Fierstein's play Casa Valentina, as well as to encourage some of the former attendees to come forward half a century later with their stories. A documentary about Casa Susanna, directed by Sébastien Lifshitz, was released in September 2022. Notwithstanding a heavy hand from the editors, this is a stunning, touching photobook. Rare and in very good condition.
