First edition. Small folio. 290x180mm. Unpaginated ff.128. Contemporary sheep, some surface chipping with a little loss. Short split to joint at foot of spine and wear to corner but overall in very good condition. Internally a little browned and with some toning to edges but this is a very nice, authentic, wide-margined copy of…the Hollow Font Book of Psalms. Elias Hutter (1553-1605) was professor of Hebrew at Leipzig University and one of the foremost Hebraicists of his age. His most important (and most scarce) book is his Nuremberg Polyglot published in 1599. The Sefer Tehillim (The Book of Psalms) was one of his last works appearing only three years before his death. Hutter had it printed using his "hollow font" system in which root letters are printed in outline only and the grammatical elements appear in solid type so that the structure of the Hebrew language can be easily understood. Hutter introduced the hollow font method in his 1587 Tanach. It is both useful and strangely beautiful, operating almost as musical notation and inviting the reader to engage with the rhythm of the language. It is rare, USTC locating four copies and Worldcat only one.
