Jourdain,1879-1919. - Russell's contributions to logic have been discussed hitherto almost entirely from his published writings. This book draws principally on unpublished materials, especially his lengthy correspondence from 1902 to 1919 with Philip Jourdain. Much new information is provided on Russell's unsuccessful attempts to solve the paradoxes, his views on descriptions and existence, his treatment of Cantorian set theory, and the preparation with Whitehead of Principia Mathematics. Jourdain's contributions illustrate the current controversies over the axioms of choice, and also show him partly anticipating some later work by Hausdorff and von Neumann. The book also contains an English translation of a paper in French on the axioms of choice and infinity which Russell published obscurely in 1911, and Jourdain's publication of the visiting card paradox and the first parts of The Philosophy of Mr. Bertrand Russell.
