Sinds mensenheugenis zijn ouderen al een populair mikpunt van spot. Het idee dat oude mensen vroeger als wijs en vroom werden gezien en altijd met respect werden behandeld klopt slechts gedeelte…lijk. Daartegenover staat namelijk het beeld van de depressieve, door zijn nageslacht gehate, gierige en zelfs op seks beluste oudere. Ook in een ver verleden werd hun soms weinig subtiel gevraagd wanneer die erfenis nou eindelijk eens kwam. Al vanaf de klassieke oudheid wordt de beeldvorming van ouderen gekenmerkt door polariteit. Kunsthistorica Anouk Janssen bestudeerde deze tegengestelde stereotyperingen aan de hand van prenten uit de 16de en 17de eeuw, destijds de belangrijkste beeldcommunicatiemiddelen. De symbolen waarmee prentmakers ouderen afbeeldden zijn talrijk: met een rozenkrans, met één been in het graf, omringd door kostbaarheden of bij het haardvuur. De populaire verschijning van de oude man met baard en bontjas kan bijvoorbeeld verklaard worden aan de hand van de levensfasetheorie die de ouderdom vergelijkt met de winter. Janssen interpreteert het duale beeld van de ouderdom voor het eerst vanuit kunsthistorisch perspectief. Zij baseerde zich op een enorme hoeveelheid - grotendeels nog niet eerder gepubliceerd - beeldmateriaal over deze levensfase. Deze unieke uitgave vormt een belangrijke bron voor wetenschappelijk onderzoek, maar door de talrijke illustraties en de toegankelijke schrijfstijl is het boek tegelijkertijd zeer verhelderend voor iedereen die met ouder worden te maken heeft. 1400 g.
