So ließ Dürers Begeisterung für die Natur Tirols die Landschaftsmalerei entstehen und Kandinsky entwickelte am Motiv des Berges die Idee der Abstraktion. Ein Bewußtsein dafür, daß die Höhen entgegen dem Volksglauben nicht des Teufels waren, entsprang dem Wissensdurst der Renaissance. Leonardo skizzierte Berg- und Gesteinsformationen, um Aufschluß über die Beschaffenheit der Natur und ihrer Erscheinungsweisen zu gewinnen. Lange bevor der Adel und das gehobene Bürgertum auf die große Bildungsreise nach Italien gingen, sind Generationen von Malern aus dem Norden über die Alpen gezogen und haben diese Wunderwelt für sich als Motiv entdeckt. Aus dieser Tradition des Reisens ließen englische Touristen im 19. Jahrhundert den Alpinismus als den Sport der Tüchtigen hervorgehen. In ihm verband sich die Leidenschaft für grandiose Panoramen mit der Herausforderung einer nur den Besten vorbehaltenen Naturerfahrung. Das Buch verfolgt die Vielfalt der Aspekte, die den Menschen mit der Bergwelt verbinden, bis in die jüngste Zeit und gibt mit grandiosen Bildern vom Matterhorn bis zu den Rocky Mountains Einblick in die Ideen und Entstehungszusammenhänge einer einzigartigen Darstellungstradition. Berge sind ein elementares Naturphänomen und der unübersehbare Ursprung ästhetischer Landschaftswahrnehmung. In kapitalen Bildwerken entfaltet der Band das für die Kunst so wichtige Thema mit seinen kulturgeschichtlichen Dimensionen, von den schwierigen Bedingungen des Reisens im Mittelalter bis zum Sehnsuchtsort unserer Tage. In der Kunst sind Berge mit einer Kulturgeschichte der Wahrnehmung verbunden. Ihre Extreme sind die Faszination von majestätischen Landschaften und die Schrecken einer gefahrvollen Natur. Der Blick auf die Berge hat seit der Renaissance ganz entscheidende Positionen der Kunstgeschichte geprägt. Mit Dürers Wanderung nach Italien begann das Thema der Landschaft selbständig zu werden, und die Reiseeindrücke der imposanten Bergpanoramen fanden in die Bildwelten der Künstler. Leonardos Erkenntniswille ließ ihn Berg- und Gesteinsformationen skizzieren. Das 17. und 18. Jahrhundert bediente sich des Motivs zur Dekoration dramatischer und arkadischer Landschaften, und die Romantik entdeckte die Bergwelt als Zufluchtsort vor den Widrigkeiten der Zivilisation. Gegen das Grauen vor den Gefahren der Höhe setzten die Maler Bilder der Erhabenheit, die Geographen aber Rationalität und Ehrgeiz. Nützliche Forschung und romantische Ideologie verbanden sich mit der Tradition der »Grand Tour« ausgerechnet bei britischen Abenteurern zur Herausforderung des sportlichen Alpinismus. In der Moderne seit Cézanne erweisen sich die Berge als dankbares Motiv formaler Verselbständigung. Die Vielfalt bildnerischer Auseinandersetzung mit dem Sujet bis in die jüngste Zeit macht deutlich, welche Suggestion für das künstlerische Sehen von dieser Formenwelt ausgeht.
