Edward Deming, fue un estadístico y profesor universitario estadounidense, aunque fueron los japoneses quienes vieron la oportunidad de aprovechar sus principios. Tan importante fue que consiguió lo que toda empresa del mundo anhela: un posicionamiento, que es esa palabra que todo consumidor o usuario tiene en su cabeza relacionada con la marca. Se puede hacer la prueba: si se dice Toyota, el consumidor dice? ¡calidad! Si se dice Volvo, el consumidor dice? Recordando a Deming, empezó por formar a las personas en estadística. Era un apasionado del control estadístico de la calidad: lo que no se mide no se controla y no se mejora. Tampoco confiaba en la tecnología por sí misma para solucionar los problemas de calidad. Le ofrecieron muchos millones para invertir en sistemas informáticos y automáticos. Su respuesta fue: por menos del 10% de lo que están dispuestos a gastar en eso, conseguiremos mejores resultados si invertimos en? ¡materia gris! También se recuerda en esta obra a otros grandes de la calidad. Era imposible olvidarlos porque todos y cada uno de sus principios y acciones están hoy día vigentes. Pocas veces, obras de hace muchos años son tan actuales como en la calidad. Por eso, ha sido imprescindible citarlos; no olvidarlos. En las últimas décadas, no obstante, han surgido avances: Seis-Sigma aporta organización, despliegue, objetivos e indicadores modernos.
