8vo, pp xiii, [1], 308, [8, adverts], hand coloured arms to the title page, 2 engraved views [one metal, one wood], frontispiece of finely hand-coloured full etching of a school uniform [watermarked 1818], uncut in original purple boards with paper vellum spine and ?later paper label, a little worn at joints and edges, else a very good clean copy in unsophisticated state, FIRST EDITION, the first full histopry of the school based upon Wilson's short guide published in the previous year, this expansion based upon the school's library records. In his preface Wilson pays tribute to former pupils' asistance including 'Mr Leigh Hunt' and was able to give an account of 40 illustrious former pupils, including Coleridge and Charles Lamb [whose account of his time at the school is here reprinted from an article previously published in the Gentleman's Magazine]. Although unlike Wilson's 1820 Epitome, this work was printed only once, but perhaps in different issues as regards plates. COPAC finds a copy with 25 plates [perhaps, then extra illustrated], whilst on-line suggests a frontispiece of Edward VI rather than the charming Bluecoat boy depicted here - which adds rather more to the book. Interestingly enough, this particular image is not amongst the historical uniform selection shown on the Christ's Hospital Website.
