Large 4to, pp 257, text in German Gothic within ruled borders, 36 etched plates after Kaulbach, bound in original bevel edged brown morocco to elaborate gilt pictorial design to upper board and spine, the lower board with gilt and blidn panelled, edges gilt, silked paper endpapers, binding a little rubbed at edges, occasional foxing to plate margins and paper interleaves as usual, but a good copy, FIRST EDITION; with Cotta's undated Stuttgard imprint; other issues for other German cities carry the date. It has been suggested that the plate at page 42 was suppressed in later printings out of decency, but all issues of the first printing seem to have it. A once popular clasic of anthropomorphic illustration, the glory of this very heavy book is in part at least the outstandingly Germanic classically inpsired binding design of which this is an excellent bright example. Its popularity with German speakers lasted throughout the 19th Century, this example with a calligraphy Christmas inscription dated 1890 at the front.…
