(engraved plates) A late novel by this Scottish-born politician and social reformer (1801-1877), a prolific author of pamphlets and books who was known as a proponent of the utopian socialist beliefs of his father, Robert Owen. (The two worked together in managing the famous experimental socialist-utopian community at New Harmony, Indiana, in the 1820s.) He later served in the U.S. Congress, where he was a key figure in the establishment of the Smithsonian Institution; he was also a believer in Spiritualism. The novel, also subtitled "Village Life in the West," is set in "the sober Quaker state of Pennsylvania" -- at least according to the opening paragraph, although parts of the story seem to take place in Ohio and Indiana. Per a contemporary review, the plot chronicles "the fortunes of an honest Irishman of Philadelphia," but also seems to involve two sisters and their husbands.
